UK firms 'facing large red tape costs'

UK companies, which might include the likes of contractor businesses, are currently having to deal with sizeable red tape costs, research suggests.

Between 2009 and this year, these costs have risen by around £11 billion, the new Burdens Barometer survey published by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has revealed.

Companies are currently facing red tape costs amounting to £88.3 billion, the study also shows.

BCC director general David Frost believes that ministers need to support UK firms by preventing the creation of further red tape in the near future.

He stated: "There needs to be an urgent and sweeping review of all regulations that incur costs for business, and importantly, a moratorium on new employment laws until at least 2014."

Last week, Mr Frost appeared to welcome certain aspects of the programme for coalition government outlined by the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats, including a proposed employment law review.
