EU consultation 'should note positive role of freelancers'

The positive economic role that freelancers can play should be noted by the European Commission, according to one expert.

A number of proposals have been made as part of the EU 2020 consultation process by the Professional Contractors Group (PCG).

The organisation's managing director John Brazier believes that the flexibility of freelance workers should not be ignored.

He commented: "The European Commission should consider it [freelancing] as an innovative solution to tackle unemployment and foster social inclusion, especially among young people and those over 50."

Mr Brazier went on to point out that people often turn to freelancing as an option if they are keen to start up their own company.

A document entitled Fairness, Clarity, Recognition: Manifesto for Freelancing was recently published by the PCG, in a bid to highlight the importance of freelancing in the UK.

The manifesto is said to have been distributed among the country's politicians.
